  • UCSB Storke Tower
As part of the Fiftieth Anniversary Carillon Recital Series, students from UCSB University Carillonist Wesley Arai's studio will present a recital from the carillon in UCSB's Storke Tower on Sunday, May 19, 2019 at 12 pm. Listeners are encouraged to bring a blanket or lawn chair to sit on the grass outside the tower during the recital.

  • World Music Series
As part of the World Music Series, Richard North will direct the UCSB Gamelan Ensemble in a showcase of an ancient style of gamelan from Cirebon, West Java, featuring dynamic drumming, delicate melodies, and lively interlocking rhythms, on Wednesday, May 22, 2019 at 12 pm in the UCSB Music Bowl. The World Music Series is co-presented by the UCSB MultiCultural Center and the Ethnomusicology Program in the Department of Music.

Directed by Robert Koenig, the UCSB Chamber Players will present an evening of chamber music favorites. The UCSB Chamber Players consist of a variety of ensembles, from duos to quintets and occasionally larger groups, which study and perform masterpieces of the chamber music literature.

As part of the World Music Series, Victor Bell will direct the UCSB Gospel Choir in a performance of traditional and contemporary songs drawn from African American religious traditions on Wednesday, May 29, 2019 at 12 pm in the UCSB Music Bowl. The World Music Series is co-presented by the UCSB MultiCultural Center and the Ethnomusicology Program in the Department of Music.

The UCSB Department of Music will present a Guest Artist Masterclass led by accompanist, vocal coach, arranger, composer, and conductor John Greer on Wednesday, May 29, 2019 from 2-4 pm in Karl Geiringer Hall in the UCSB Music Building. Mr. Greer will work with students from the UCSB Voice Program.

Svanibor Pettan (University of Ljubljana) will present a talk titled "Minorities in a War-Peace Continuum: How Applied Ethnomusicology Can Help" on Wednesday, May 29, 2019 from 3:30-4:45 pm in Music Library Seminar Room 2406. This lecture will provide insight into the current state of the study of music and minorities, mainly in the context of the International Council for Traditional Music, and features the author's new frame of ten research approaches to this topic. Finally, selected projects are used to examine the potentials of applied ethnomusicology in the scholarly work on the war-peace continuum. Sponsored by Ethnomusicology Forum.
