As part of the World Music Series, Tanyaradzwa Tawengwa will collaborate with UCSB students to perform The Dawn of the Rooster, an opera that she composed to tell the story of her family during Zimbabwe's liberation struggle, on Wednesday, February 12, 2020 at 12 pm in Karl Geiringer Hall (Music Building, UC Santa Barbara). UC Santa Barbara students in History and Music will support Tawengwa with monologues, with Jared Holton on piano. Tanyaradzwa is a PhD student at the University of Kentucky and an award-winning performer on the African mbira, piano, and cello. She sings in African, African American, and Western classical traditions including opera.
