The UCSB Department of Music dedicates this concert to the memory of Dr. Linda Shaver-Gleason.
Dr. Linda Shaver-Gleason died this past January at the age of 36. To use Linda’s preferred words, she was “assassinated by cancer.” Linda came to UCSB to pursue graduate studies in viola, and received her PhD in musicology in 2016 with a dissertation on “English reception of Felix Mendelssohn as Told Through British Music Histories.” Linda was a vibrant part of the community here and enriched many of our lives as a musician and as a scholar, although those were never separate identities for her. By the time that she finished her degree, she already had both a son, Linus, and a diagnosis of Stage IV breast cancer. Since then, in the midst of parenthood and medical crises, Linda somehow managed to present scholarly papers at international conferences, run a highly successful musicology blog and appear on Jeopardy.
Between her blog and her active, witty and socially engaged presence on social media, Linda touched, influenced and endeared herself to more people than most scholars could hope to reach in a full lifetime. She is missed and mourned by an international community of friends, scholars and musicians.
Our condolences and warmest wishes to Linda’s husband Chris, their son Linus, their families and everyone that has been supporting them.
At the family’s request, any donations in honor of Linda can be sent to the Viola Bank of the American Viola Society at tinyurl.com/violabank.
