UCSB Music faculty members and doctoral student to perform in Opera Santa Barbara’s Madama Butterfly

On Friday, November 1st and Sunday, November 3rd, UCSB faculty members Benjamin Brecher, Neil Garber, Dustin McKinney, and Jon Nathan, as well as doctoral student Kelly Guerra, will take the stage at the Granada Theatre for Opera Santa Barbara’s production of Giacomo Puccini’s opera, Madama Butterfly. Professor Benjamin Brecher will sing the role of Goro, while Jon Nathan will perform as Principal Timpani, Neil Garber will perform as Principal Double Bass, and Dustin McKinney will perform as Second Trumpet in the Opera Santa Barbara Orchestra. Mezzo-soprano Kelly Guerra, a student of Associate Professor Isabel Bayrakdarian, will perform as part of the chorus.
 
The production will open Opera Santa Barbara’s 26th season and will be conducted by Kostis Protopapas and directed by Octavio Cardenas, last seen with OSB for Carmen in 2016. Vocalists Eleni Calenos (Mimi/La Bohème, ‘18) and Harold Meers (Le Chevalier des Grieux/Manon, ‘17 and Don José/Carmen, ‘16) will return as the doomed geisha and sailor.
