Saxophonist Derek Douget will work with students from the UCSB Jazz Ensemble (directed by Dr. Jon Nathan) on Thursday, February 22, 2018 from 4-5:45 p.m. in Lotte Lehmann Concert Hall. The ensemble will perform pieces from their upcoming concert, including music by Duke Ellington (Bonga, Caravan as written for Ella Fitzgerald), Count Basie (The Blues Machine), Bob Brookmeyer (Tah Dum), Maria Schneider (Dance You Monster, Green Piece), and quite a few others. Sponsored by the Lobero Theatre, this collaboration is designed to inspire young jazz players, to celebrate Black History Month, and to help create the jazz audiences of the future.
About Derek Douget
Derek Douget, a member of the Ellis Marsalis Quartet and the Director of the Heritage School of Music, finely mixes his Louisiana upbringing with his strong individualism and idiosyncratic voice. Playing the alto and soprano saxophones, Douget has performed with many notable musicians on the New Orleans scene, including the inaugural Louis Armstrong Quintet–a performing group of graduate students dedicated to teaching jazz in New Orleans area schools. Derek Douget has performed or worked with a veritable who’s who in the world of jazz, including Nicholas Payton, Ellis Marsalis, Dr. John, Terence Blanchard, Allen Toussaint, Branford Marsalis, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Randy Brecker, Wyclef Jean, Jason Marsalis,  Kermit Ruffins, Stefon Harris and many other excellent musicians.
