Directed by Jeremy Haladyna, the UCSB Ensemble for Contemporary Music (ECM) will present "ALL AMERICAN AND THEN SOME!!*" on Wednesday, March 7, 2018 at 4 p.m. in Lotte Lehmann Concert Hall on the UCSB campus. The Ensemble blusters out in a program mostly American: with "Composer's Holiday" by Lukas Foss, Charles Ives' "Three Quarter-Tone Pieces,"  Ross Lee Finney's "Oboe Quartet," with soloist Evan Losoya and Leo Sowerby's "Clarinet Sonata" with Hiroko Sugawara. Doctoral candidate M.D. Owensby offers some new quarter-tone sounds of his own in "Vocalise," with featured flutist Cynthia Vong. There's exploration, too, of Seattle-based William Bergsma (1921-1994), in his first hearing by ECM, including music from his "Blatant Hypotheses" for trombone and percussion and his "Flute Quintet" for solo flute and strings. The "furriners" should excite comment as well, with Iannis Xenakis' "Embellie" for viola alone (M.D. Owensby) and Bojan Glavina's "Dimensions" for piano 4-hands, featuring Petra Peršolja and ECM Director Jeremy Haladyna.
