Undergraduate - Audition Information

Audition Requirements By Major

Freshman Entrance Audition requirements are listed below. Students may audition simultaneously for both the BA and BM programs and will later be informed as to which program (if either) they have been admitted.

Please fill out, print, and bring to your audition a completed Instrumental or Vocal Audition Form and a list of the repertoire that you have studied and performed over the last 2 years.

Piano BM

Three contrasting solo works from different historical periods, from memory. Sight-reading.

Piano BA

Two contrasting solo works from different historical periods. Sight-reading.

Strings

Two or more contrasting works from the standard literature for your instrument, demonstrating technical proficiency.

Woodwinds and Brass (except French Horn)

Two or more contrasting works from the standard literature for your instrument. Demonstrate technical proficiency through chromatic and major scales, arpeggios and/or etudes.

French Horn

Two etudes in contrasting styles. Solo of choice, one movement, comparable in difficulty to Mozart Concerto No. 3, K447. Major scales up to two sharps and flats, two octaves.

Percussion

Two or more works from the standard literature for at least TWO of the THREE instruments: SNARE DRUM, MARIMBA, or TIMPANI (a total of 2 to 4 pieces). Demonstrate technical proficiency through chromatic and major scales, arpeggios, and/or etudes. Demonstrate basic sight-reading ability on at least one of the three instruments.
 
Suggested works include:
  • Snare Drum: Any etudes from “Portraits in Rhythm” (Cirone) or Intermediate or Advanced Snare Drum Studies (Peters), or similar.
  • Timpani: Any etudes from Goodman, Firth, Peters (Intermediate Timpani Studies), or Raynor Carroll, or similar.
  • Marimba: A movement from Baroque Sonata for Violin or Flute (such as examples found in Macmillan “Masterpieces for Marimba”), or any two or four mallet work for marimba, or similar.

Voice

Minimum of two songs or arias, one in a foreign language (art songs or arias only: no popular, folk-song, or musical comedy).
