Margo Halsted, Adjunct Professor of Music at UCSB, will present a carillon recital on Sunday, August 7, 2016 at 2 p.m. at UCSB's Storke Tower. Ms. Halsted will perform arrangements of popular songs and classical favorites, as well as pieces written expressly for carillon. Admission is free. Please join us on the lawn, bring a blanket or chair, and enjoy the concert in the Santa Barbara sunshine!

The UCSB Department of Music announces its Fall 2016 Concert Series! The department offers a wide variety of music to the Santa Barbara and Goleta communities, with something for every music lover. This season opens with a recital by flutist Jill Felber and several of her UCSB colleagues, and includes performances by seven of the Department of Music's ensembles, offering everything from classical to world music. Flutist Jill Felber has been hailed for her "beautifully finished performances" by The Detroit News and has been praised by Musical America for her "handsome performance." The British journal PAN writes, "Felber was stunning...not only refined but also full of fun." Ms. Felber will be joined by several of her colleagues for a beautiful evening of chamber music at Trinity Episcopal Church in downtown Santa Barbara. Guests include pianist Robert Koenig, who will join Ms. Felber for a premier performance of Linda Holland’s new piece, Exuberance, written to commemorate Ms. Felber’s 25th year of teaching at UCSB. Pianist Dianne Frazer will also take the stage with Ms. Felber for a performance of selections from their duo CD, Fusion. Flutist Claudia Anderson will join Ms. Felber to complete the ZAWA! duo, with performances of Cynthia Folio’s two flute and piano piece, Z3, and Jennifer Higdon’s running the edGE. Additional guests to be announced.

Directed by Jeremy Haladyna, UCSB’s Ensemble for Contemporary Music (ECM) is known for its unconventional repertoire choices and daring performances. The ensemble will present its annual fall concert on Wednesday, November 16, 2016, at 4 pm in Lotte Lehmann Concert Hall on the UCSB campus.

Directed by Scott Marcus, the UCSB Middle East Ensemble will present their annual fall concert on Saturday, November 19, 2016 at 7:30 p.m. in UCSB’s Lotte Lehmann Concert Hall.

The Chamber Orchestra and Chamber Players will present their annual fall concert on Monday, November 28, 2016 at 7:30 p.m. in Lotte Lehmann Concert Hall on the UCSB campus. The Chamber Orchestra is comprised of undergraduate and graduate music students from the string, woodwind, brass, and percussion programs. Winners of the quarterly UCSB Chamber Music Competition will perform as the UCSB Chamber Players, and open the first half of the concert.

  • Gospel Choir

Join the Gospel Choir for their annual fall concert on Friday, December 2, 2016 at 7:30 p.m. in Lotte Lehmann Concert Hall on the UCSB campus. Under the direction of Victor Bell, the UCSB Gospel Choir presents sold-out performances each quarter and is regularly featured in numerous community events and university celebrations. The Gospel Choir recently produced a CD entitled Praize Party on the Yard and has been featured on the WB sitcom The Steve Harvey Show.

The American Council of Learned Societies (ACLS) recently announced Sara Ballance, a UCSB graduate student in musicology, as a recipient of the 2016 Mellon/ACLS Dissertation Completion fellowship for her topic, "Learning to Listen: Musical Hearing and the Construction of Musicality in the Nineteenth Century".

Kacey Link (DMA '13) is featured in the summer issue of the UCSB Alumni Association's Coastlines magazine for the recent publication of her new book, Tracing Tangueros: Argentine Tango Instrumental Music, the first English-language foundational study on tango.

UCSB Department of Music alumna, Dr. Diane L. White-Clayton (M.A. `96, Ph.D. `98), is the latest music alumni to be featured by the UCSB Alumni Association for their "Alumni Spotlight." Dr. White-Clayton recently directed and was a featured soloist with the UCSB Gospel Choir for their 25th Anniversary Reunion Concert in June. UCSB Department of Music alumna, Carol Joe (flute), recently won a position with the United States Army Band "Pershing's Own." Ms. Joe, who completed her bachelor of music degree in 2012 while studying with Professor Jill Felber, took the time to answer a few questions about her new job, and share some of her favorite memories from her time at UCSB.

Congratulations to Carly Yartz, the Department of Music’s Graduate Student Advisor, on her recent nomination for the Margaret T. Getman Service to Students Award. This award honors UC staff members for their “exemplary commitment to students and contribution to the quality of life” at the university.
