Los Angeles-based jazz ensemble, Off Cell, will present a concert on Wednesday, February 1, 2017 at 8 p.m. in Karl Geiringer Hall. Admission is free and the event is open to the public.
About Off Cell
Off Cell is grounded in jazz but not afraid to explore new sonic territory. Their music blends inventive melodies with captivating textures, always shifting and keeping listeners off balance, full of a modern, youthful energy that remains conscious of the many traditions of improvised music. All members of the quartet contribute original material to the group’s repertoire for a stylistically diverse yet sonically unified set of music. Off Cell is primarily Los Angeles-based and their eponymous debut album is set to be released in February. The group consists of saxophonist Garrett Wingfield, guitarist Caleb Veazey, bassist Miller Wrenn, and Clint Dodson on drums.
About Miller Wrenn
Miller Wrenn, UCSB Music Department alumnus (BA Music, 2014) is a bassist, composer, and educator based in Los Angeles, CA. His compositions and performances are primarily concerned with the tangibility of intention and unifying elements of composition and improvisation into one essential whole, regardless of stylistic idiom or performative medium.
As a bassist he is regarded for his versatility and deep knowledge of many musical traditions. He performs and records frequently in a wide variety of contexts. Recently and most notably with The Ensemble at CalArts, with which he performed the world premiere of John Cage's "all sides of the small stone for Erik Satie" at the RedCat Theater in Los Angeles, and avant-garde jazz luminary Vinny Golia, with whom he performs regularly in both his small and large ensembles.
Additionally, he performs with and composes for a multitude of collective musical ventures and his own projects. He is a member of Off Cell, a forward-thinking quartet comprised of musicians from Los Angeles and Dallas, which will be releasing its debut record in February. He was recently commissioned by EnsembleVomma to compose a long-form work for the ensemble's first performance at ArtShare LA, which will also feature a world premiere by renowned composer/violinist Mark Menzies. Finally, his own quartet, Seedthing, will be releasing its first record this spring.
Miller is currently pursuing a Master of Fine Arts degree in Bass Performance and Composition from California Institute of the Arts.
