The concept of a crossroads, where the metaphysical and physical worlds merge, is often found in West African and West Indian societies and in the blues world in the U.S. This paper examines the concept within the early jazz and blues culture of these two cities, the importance of public dancing, and the ways in which their specific urban traditions have been used to restore and revitalize historic districts in recent decades.
