The Department offers two undergraduate degree programs: the Bachelor of Music (BM) with various performance emphases, and the Bachelor of Arts (BA) Music Major. When you submit an application for admission, you simply declare Music as your desired major: admission to the specific degree program (BA or BM) and emphasis will be determined later by the Department of Music. Applicants may audition simultaneously for both a BM emphasis and the same performance class within the BA Music major, and will later be informed into which performance program (if either) they have been admitted. Transfer applicants should see the Guidance for Music Transfer Students, available from the department, for information concerning transferred credit and advanced placement. See the UCSB General Catalog Music pages online for full details of the major course requirements.
The Music Studies Major of the Bachelor of Arts degree program offers a wide range of options within a liberal arts BA degree. Students take the same set of General Education requirements as all BA students in the College of Letters and Science: see the UCSB General Catalog College of Letters and Science pages online for full details. The core music theory, musicianship, analysis and music history courses are the same as for the Bachelor of Music programs, and there are further requirements for options in counterpoint, ethnomusicology, and other music academic electives. Three years of ensemble participation are required, and more encouraged. All BA Music Studies Majors must take two years of performance courses: either individual lessons--if they pass the appropriate audition or class piano (open also to beginners in piano), or class voice. Applicants are thus not required to pass a performance audition to be BA music majors, but must do so if they wish to take individual (private) performance lessons. At the upper-division level, the BA Music Studies major includes several units of free music electives: upper-division (Junior and Senior level) performance classes are available to those who pass the sophomore audition, all other classes by pre-requisite. BA Music Studies majors must complete a senior project which may be an recital (in performance), a composition, or a research paper. Visit the UCSB General Catalog Music pages online for full details of the major course requirements, and see the BM and BA Audition and Jury Guidelines available from the department for details of entrance auditions and end-of-year performance juries, auditions and composition assessments.
There are optional Emphases offered in Ethnomusicology, Western Art Music, and Interdisciplinary Music Studies, which appear on the student's transcript.
The Bachelor of Music degree, with emphases in various performance disciplines, is a professional degree, open by audition to highly qualified performance students. The program of study is focused more intensely on performance accomplishment, with fewer General Education requirements than the BA degree: see the UCSB General Catalog College of Letters and Science pages online for details. Applicants seeking admission to a Bachelor of Music performance emphasis are required to pass an entrance audition on Entrance Audition day during the January before anticipated enrollment in UCSB, or by special arrangement. The core music theory, musicianship, analysis and music history courses are the same as for the Bachelor of Arts Music major. The various performance BM programs all require active participation in ensembles, some of which are specified for certain programs, including orchestra or wind ensemble for orchestral instruments, choir and opera workshop for voice, piano duets for piano, and chamber music for all instruments. BM performance programs all require passing end-of-year freshman and sophomore auditions (performance exams for a faculty jury), and Junior and Senior Recitals, presented in public. Visit the UCSB General Catalog Music pages online for full details of major course requirements, and see the BM and BA Audition and Jury Guidelines available from the department for details of entrance auditions and end-of-year performance juries and auditions.
The Bachelor of Music Degree is awarded in the following emphases, which appear on the student's transcript:
- Double Bass
- French Horn

Students majoring in other disciplines are able to pursue an interest in music at a less intensive level than the major by completing a minor in music. The wide diversity of courses offered by the Department of Music is well-suited to cater to varied interests such as vocal or instrumental music study, composition, music history, music theory, and ethnomusicology (non-Western music). With the appropriate prerequisites or consent of instructor, all music courses, both those designated for the major and for the non-major, are open to students in the minor. Visit the UCSB General Catalog Music pages online for full details of minor course requirements.
