In the 50 + years of its existence, the ever-evolving institution that is the Juilliard String Quartet has become a living American legend. It has, from the beginning and throughout its career, been recognized for the boldness of its interpretation of the classics, with an equal and parallel tradition of championing the new; a vibrant combination of the familiar and the daring. The Quartet features Joel Smirnoff, violin, Ronald Copes, violin (former UCSB faculty member), Joel Krosnick, cello, and Samuel Rhodes, viola.

The ECM ("exciting, cerebral, and ever underrated" SB Independent) finds new music Under Every Rock: even in the most unlikely places and activities in this program directed by Jeremy Haladyna. There's new music derived from cicadas, [Kevin Volans], pieces written in margins, [Betsy Jolas], and even music born in nightmares [David Shere]. And there's the music which came of the need to make a choice: [Tom Johnson's Action Music IV]. Surely, too, to be a highlight is a first offering from new Corwin Professor of composition, Clarence Barlow, who finds music where others don't even bother looking.
