World Music Series - Fall 2009

Produced by the Program of Ethnomusicology and the UCSB Multicultural Center, concerts in this series are offered every Wednesday at noon in the Music Bowl and are aimed at increasing awareness of different cultural traditions. Recent concerts have featured Japanese, Chinese, Ugandan, Finnish, Bulgarian, and native American music and dance.

All concerts are held in the Music Bowl, FREE admission. In case of rain, the performance will be held in Music 1145.


NORTEÑO MUSIC with LOS CATANES DEL NORTE

Los Catanes del Norte will perform music from different regions in Mexico including corridos, rancheras, and boleros norteños.


NATIVE AMERICAN FOLK AND FLUTE MUSIC
Wednesday, Oct. 14, Noon, UCSB Music Bowl (Music Building),  Free Admission Renowned artist Carlos Reynosa will perform his award-winning music on guitar and Native American flute. He has won several NAMMYs (Native American Music Awards).


MARIACHI INTEGRAL
Wednesday, Oct. 21, Noon, UCSB Music Bowl (Music Building),  Free Admission
Mariachi Integral performs in anticipation of Día de los Muertos / Day of the Dead (November 2),  celebrated widely throughout most of  Northern America and Latin America with community and private remembrances of loved ones who have passed on. Altars are created consisting of the deceased's favorite personal articles, food, flowers, and music. Members of Mariachi Integral with special guests will take you on a sonic journey with some of the music heard throughout homes and grave sites during this cultural celebration.


XYLOPHONE MUSIC FROM GHANA
Wednesday, Oct. 28, Noon, UCSB Music Bowl (Music Building),  Free Admission
Mike Marks, a recent graduate of UCSB's ethnomusicology program, will play a selection of traditional music from Ghana. His instrument, the gyil, is the primary instrument for the Lobi, Dagara, and Sissala people of the Upper West Region in Northern Ghana and is used in nearly every celebratory aspect of traditional culture (funerals, weddings, dances, etc.).


UCSB GAMELAN ENSEMBLE
Wednesday, Nov. 4, Noon, UCSB Music Bowl (Music Building),  Free Admission
The Gamelan, the principal orchestral ensemble of Indonesia, is comprised chiefly of metallic percussion instruments. The UCSB Gamelan Ensemble, directed by Mike Pievac, will perform traditional music of Central and Western Java.

UCSB GOSPEL CHOIR
Wednesday, Nov. 18, Noon, UCSB Music Bowl (Music Building),  Free Admission    
Directed by Victor Bell, the choir will perform traditional and contemporary songs drawn from African American religious traditions.
