Ned Canty Lecturer Ned Canty most recently directed La Calisto for Portland Opera’s Studio Program. Other recent productions include the world premiere of Lee Hoiby’s This is the Rill Speaking at Symphony Space in NY, which Opera News called “one of the highlight’s of the New York opera season”; a new production of The Mikado for Opera Theatre of St. Louis; and the world premiere, in Tel Aviv, of Lost Childhood, a new opera based on the Holocaust memoir of Yehuda Nir. In 2006 he directed L’italiana in Algeri at Connecticut Opera, a production which was listed by the Hartford Courant as #2 on a list of the Top Ten Arts Events of The Year. In 2004 he directed the critically acclaimed revival of Lee Hoiby’s A Month in the Country, currently available on Albany Records. In 2003 he directed the American premieres of Voice of the Forest and Tears of the Knife at Gotham Chamber Opera, which the New York Times described as being staged “with a startling combination of sensitivity and panache.” Prior to that he directed Don Giovanni at Florida Grand Opera; Lucky Girl at the McCarter Theatre and Madama Butterfly for the New York City Opera National Company. He especially enjoys working with young singers and has directed multiple shows at the Curtis Institute, Manhattan School of Music, Juilliard, The Israeli Vocal Arts Institute, Juilliard, Yale, AVA, Boston University, University of Michigan and LSU as well as with the Young American Artist Program at Glimmerglass Opera. Among some of his favorite productions are the shows he has directed at Wolf Trap Opera (Don Giovanni, A Midsummer Night's Dream, L’italiana in Algeri, and The Rake’s Progress); Il Campanello at the Teatro Comunale in Casalmaggiore, Italy; L’elisir d'amore at the Shanghai Grand Theatre in Shanghai, China; Pagliacci at Edmonton Opera; Orpheus in the Underworld and The Music Shop for the Juilliard Opera Theatre; Chérubin, The Rape of Lucretia, and La bohème at the Israeli Vocal Arts Institute in Tel Aviv. Future projects include staging the Apprentice scenes for Santa Fe Opera in 2009, Tosca at Glimmerglass in 2010 and Menotti’s The Last Savage at Santa Fe opera in 2011. As an actor Mr. Canty has performed at Hartford Stage Company, the McCarter Theatre, the New York Renaissance Festival, and in over thirty-five states with the National Players. Mr. Canty is a winner of an ITT Fellowship to study Shakespeare Performance in London, and has been a member of the Lincoln Center Theatre Directors Lab since it’s founding in 1995.
