The ethnomusicology program consists of core courses in three areas: Regional Studies especially the Middle East, South Asia, Eastern Europe, American folk and vernacular music, China, Turkey and the Ottoman Empire, the Balkans, and Roma ("Gypsy") traditions; Issues - such as anthropology of music, globalization, cosmopolitanism, post-structuralism, organology, tourism; and Methods - such as fieldwork, notation & transcription, tuning, pitch, and timbral analysis. Coursework for the MA is normally completed in two years, coursework for the PhD can be completed in a third year. There are also (1) a thesis requirement for the M.A., and (2) comprehensive examination and dissertation requirements for the Ph.D.
